"My new router WPN 824v2"

As I needed my wireless signal to go further I bought this rangemax router. It claims "Data speed of up to 108 Mbps*" but I have not seen it work faster than 54 Mbps on my wireless connection. That was the speed that my old Netcomm NB5440 Mbps achieved! However that is not the problem. We get dropouts. It is not possible to forecast when they will occur. They don't occur when my husband with his LAN connection is active on his computer but it is when his computer is on standby. But it does not happen each time he goes on standby. Rebooting the router fixes the problem immediately, even if his computer remains on standby. I noticed this morning that while I could not get an internet connection the emails kept coming in. Eventually that too ceased, after I had rebooted my computer.

Have I got a faulty router or is it to do with his computer? Netgear want me to disable my firewalls and see what happens!!! Any guesses? I told them I did not want to do this for the 24 hours it might take for the problem to occur. They also suggest it might be my configuration - Optus cable to Motorola surfboard modem to Netcomm V300 to the WPN824. I asked how that could be a problem if the previous router could handle it without problems but no-one wishes to enter into that speculation or give me answers.
