May Main Meeting 2009

toshiba

Tonight Toshiba made a welcome return to demonstrate their newly released NB200 Mini Notebook. By the way it’s a mini note book now not a netbook, apparently that is someone’s brand name.

Justin White, Toshiba’s Product Marketing Manager, was on hand to run through the features of their newest offering in the mini notebook range.
Operating System
The NB200 is supplied with Windows XP home. Justin spoke of the possible configurations under Windows 7. It may be that mini notebooks may have a restricted number of applications that can be running at the same time. While this is unlikely, negotiations with Microsoft on this issue are continuing.
I have often wondered why these netbooks, sorry that’s, mini notebooks, do not come with a DVD as they are clearly aimed in part at an entertainment market. Justin’s answer, and the explanation for the possible restriction on Windows 7, is the marketing agreements regarding the use of these minis between the manufacturers and Intel and Microsoft.

Hardware
The CPU is a 1.66 Ghz Intel Atom N280.
There are two hard drives a 120 or a 160 Gig
It comes with a 1 gig DDR2 533 memory, which you can upgrade to 2 gigs.

The screen is a 10.1 “ WSVGA with a glossy LCD cover and a resolution of 1024 X 600.
Justin started the talk with a description of the difference between the note book and the mini.

The principal one being that the minis are designed for mobile communications and small work such as note taking, while the standard notebook is a creative device with all the features needed to bring out your creativity.
The NB200 comes with the accepted standard inclusions such as Webcam, 3 USB ports, LAN connection, SD/MMC card reader and Wireless connection, the NB200/OOP also included bluetooth

Where the NB200 really starts to shine is in the clever innovations, Toshiba has introduced in this new series.
Starting with a full size keyboard and a large touch pad.
Some of the truly innovative features of the NB200 are the sleep and charge USB port. As an example I could recharge my bluetooth headset overnight simply by plugging it into the sleep and charge USB port without have to leave the NB200 on.

If you have a webcam why not make real use of it?. The NB200 comes with Face Recognition software. It is a clever way to protect your work from intrusion, especially if you used the mini notebook as a business tool
